Thomas Sarbach

Thomas Sarbach was born in Paraguay, South America, and was adopted by Swiss parents, making Visp, Switzerland his home. Trained at the Ecole des Baux Arts in Sion, Switzerland, he delved into graffiti art and was arrested in Brig for vandalism. During incarceration, he requested to see the governor Escher Rolf to explain his situation. As luck would have it, Escher was an admirer of his work, and granted Sarbach authority to create his art freely in the city. It was not until Thomas found an affinity to the material of gold-leaf that his paintings began to take a new life. But it wasn’t an instantaneous process. His early works began from a more modest beginning, as he collected silver and gold-coloured foil from cigarette boxes and chocolate bar wrappers. From there, he began to utilize gold-leaf into his work. The gold he uses now are mostly obtained from Thailand, learning to manipulate and mold the delicate material into textural patterns and shapes along with contrasting oil colours. The results are paintings that contain a vibrant energy that can only really be appreciated in the real. He photographs his own work using natural sunlight, but concedes that photographs don’t bring out the texture and feelings in his work.
